Peppermint oil stimulates the mind, increasing the ability to focus. When inhaled, it restores the sense of taste by stimulating the trigeminal nerve. Oddly, inhaling peppermint oil can also curb the appetite. Peppermint is like a rush of fresh energy into the system. It allows us to relax instead of letting anxiety build up in our body or mind. Peppermint oil is specific for people who move between highs and lows. Peppermint is renowned for action on the digestive system and for use in bowel disorders.

Which Peppermint should I choose?

Peppermint Piperita is the most common and popular type of Peppermint. It is distilled from Mentha piperita which is true peppermint. Peppermint Arvensis is distilled from Mentha arvensis which is corn mint. Peppermint Arvensis contains more menthol than Peppermint Piperita giving it a sweeter stronger aroma. Piperita is considered to be the more therapeutic as Arvensis often has some of the menthol extracted to make menthol crystals. Arvensis is still very therapeutic, I especially like it for the respiratory system. Arvensis smells more like the Christmas candy-cane.

Peppermint Piperita Essential Oil

Botanical Name: Mentha piperita
Country of Origin: India
Extraction Method: steam distilled
Part Utilized: stems, leaves, flower buds
Plant Family: Labiatae
General Information: We carry two Peppermint oils. Mentha piperita is the oil from the true peppermint plant. Mentha arvensis is the oil from the corn mint plant which is in the peppermint family. These two oils are extremely similar. The main difference is arvensis contains a higher menthol content. This gives it more of a candycane scent where piperita has more of a peppermint patty scent. While they have the same therapeutic uses, arvensis is the preferred oil for diffusing and for making products such as soaps and lotions, while piperita is more popular for topical application because it is less harsh since it has less menthol.
Cautions: Peppermint oil is stimulating to the uterus. Extreme caution, mostly as to the amount used, should be taken with peppermint oils if pregnant.

We recommend using essential oils topically or diffusing them for their aroma. We do NOT recommend ingesting any essential oil.
